Santa Fe General Plan, Santa Fe, NM

Santa Fe, New Mexico’s capital, is one the most distinctive cities in the country and the oldest capital city in North America. The City is a meeting ground of Native American, Hispanic and Anglo cultures, and a major tourist destination.

Major issues addressed included growth management, economic development, preserving Santa Fe’s character with growth, balancing the needs of tourists and residents, and coordinating land use planning with metropolitan transportation planning. The General Plan promotes city-centered growth, mixed-use centers and neighborhoods planned along Spanish precepts, with a plaza or public space surrounded by a mix of uses at the heart of each neighborhood. Streets are planned to allow for a rapid bus loop to downtown, and street, block and building massing standards and guidelines were included.

Adopted 1996
