Much of Tacoma, Washington state’s second largest City, evolved during the post World War II period. In response to the City’s interest in identifying ways to encourage pedestrian-oriented development in centers, Dyett & Bhatia worked with the regional transit agency (Pierce Transit) on new zoning and subdivision regulations, design guidelines and engineering standards to further these objectives, which are outlined in the City’s Growth Management and Land Use Plan. In close collaboration with the community, regulations were prepared to promote mixed-use and transit-friendly development in sixteen mixed-use centers, ranging in scale from its downtown to neighborhood centers, and along transit corridors.
