Dyett & Bhatia has carried out some of the most prominent smart growth assignments, including a new General Plan focused on sustainable development for the City of Petaluma, and a voter-mandated smart growth General Plan for the City of San Ramon.

Dyett & Bhatia has also pioneered many of the techniques used for land use and transportation integration and has remained an authority on smart growth since it prepared the BART land use impact study in the mid-1970s. The firm received a National Award from the American Planning Association in 1996 on the subject. Dyett & Bhatia has prepared regulations to promote transit (the Model Regulations for Transit we prepared for Portland's Tri-Met are the benchmark), and is currently working across the country to integrate land use planning with new rail systems.
