Dyett & Bhatia is working to develop a Station Area Plan for the Lake Merritt BART Station in Oakland and to complete the environmental review. Dyett & Bhatia will be working with the City of Oakland, BART, MTC, and the Peralta Community College District to prepare the Plan. The planning area encompasses Laney College, Chinatown, the Oakland Museum, civic buildings of Alameda County and the City of Oakland, and the channel connecting Lake Merritt to the estuary. There are many diverse residents, students, and commercial businesses that make up the “community” of this area, and Chinatown functions as a citywide center for the Asian community. Dyett & Bhatia will work with the local community, property owners, public agencies, and city staff to understand the various needs and create consensus around a vision for the Lake Merritt Station Area and specific projects.

Dyett & Bhatia will develop a Specific Plan that addresses the needs of the community, as well as the needs of BART related to ridership, and the needs of the College District related to education and maximizing the use of their land. The Specific Plan will also aim to transition the area from its current status as an “Urban Neighborhood Station” to a “Regional Center” station type. Goals of the project include increasing transit ridership, reducing vehicle miles traveled, increasing the use of non-automobile modes of transportation, increasing the supply of housing—particularly affordable housing, increasing employment, improving access to jobs along the transit corridor, and providing service and retail options in the station area.
