Dyett & Bhatia is leading a team of firms that are nationally-recognized for their planning and zoning work to completely revise the zoning ordinance for Los Angeles County, one of the largest and most diverse local jurisdictions in the nation. Updating the land use regulations for a county that encompasses 4,000 square miles, 78 unincorporated communities, and an extraordinary variety of population groups, development conditions, and natural environmental characteristics requires a thoughtfully crafted process and a very experienced professional team.

A major objective of the update is to revise the current code, parts of which date from the 1920’s, to create an effective 21st century tool for implementing the County’s General Plan, which is being comprehensively revised for the first time since its adoption in 1980. Among the significant changes being proposed are reorganization of the ordinance and consolidation of provisions to make the regulations easier to understand and use, revisions to streamline zoning administration, and creation of new zones with clear, complementary purposes.

The update is also intended to develop new zoning and design standards that will provide a more coherent sense of place, promote higher density residential development and commercial redevelopment in targeted areas, and implement the County’s objectives for environmental and economic sustainability.
