American Planning Association Sacramento Section Award, 1998. The 42-block area Capitol Area is anchored by the State Capitol Building and Capitol Park. Planning for this area is regulated by the State of California. D&B prepared a plan for the State that envisions the area as a vital mixed-use center containing office, residential, and supporting commercial uses. Over 10,000 new state employees—currently dispersed in locations throughout the region—would be accommodated, adjacent to the Capitol Area’s seven light rail stations, in a pedestrian-oriented setting. The plan targets 65% of peak-hour trips to be made by alternative modes by 2007 – one of the highest anywhere. The Plan is leading to the largest infill in Sacramento’s history. Several hundred new homes—townhomes, zero-lot line detached, multifamily, and lofts—and more than 2 million square feet of non-residential development have already been completed. This includes the East End Complex, with more than 1.5 million square feet of space – the largest civic building construction project ever in California, housing 6,500 employees. |
